Motion Control Tips and Tricks

The Joy-Con tracks wrist rotation, not arm position. That single fact explains most bad shots in the game - and most of the tricks below. Read these in order and the difference is immediate.

Calibrate before every session

Go to System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Motion Controls before you play. Drift is the number one cause of a shot that should have scored and did not. If a sport starts feeling "off" mid-session, recalibrate rather than blaming the game.

Use small wrist flicks, not big arm swings

Because the tracking is rotational, a full arm swing registers as a small, weak input. Practise with your forearm still and your wrist doing the work. This single change fixes most tennis, table tennis and bowling accuracy problems.

Wear the strap and clear the table

These sports need a lot of arm room. Strap the Joy-Con on, move drinks and fragile objects away, and make sure you are in Tabletop mode with a flat, stable surface - skateboarding especially will not work on a soft or wobbly table.

Bowling: time the release, add spin

Release the ball as your hand passes your leg, never pressing ZR or ZL mid-throw. Twist your wrist at the moment of release to put curve on the ball, and target the 1-3 pocket instead of the middle of the lane. A straight-down-the-middle line is the classic cause of splits.

Tennis: swing early, hit high

Swing slightly before the peak of the toss - the timing window is only about two frames - and contact the ball at the top of the swing for a Power Serve.

Golf: read the wind before the aim

Check the wind meter first. Wedges and irons drift much further than drives, so adjust your club choice before you adjust your line.

Archery: pull back to zoom

Pulling the string Joy-Con further back zooms in, which stabilises your aim. Then compensate for wind, arrow drop and height - the crosshair alone will usually fall short.

Thumb Wrestling: charge, feint, counter

Lower the Joy-Con to make your thumb bigger and pin harder. Drop early to fake a charge, then counter-pin. When pinned, shake side to side, and increase the force of the shake each try - the system escalates until you break out.

Farm Spocco Points with the shortest loop

Bowling and Tennis have the quickest match loops and the most intuitive motion, which makes them the best points-per-minute in the game. Perform better and you earn more, so chasing a spare or an ace is the fastest way to raise your income.

Do not play as a guest

Guest players in local multiplayer earn zero Spocco Points and are stuck with default customisation. Always select your own system profile.

Use Sightseeing Tour for collectibles

Spocco Photos and Island Missions unlock through the Sightseeing Tour, not through free play or timed modes. If you are hunting collectibles, that is the mode you want.
