What Is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is Nintendo's return to the party-sports format it built its reputation on with Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. It is a launch-window title for Nintendo Switch 2, published and developed entirely by Nintendo, and it released worldwide on October 22, 2026.

The set piece is the return of Wuhu Island (called Spocco Resort in the western release), a tropical island with a hub area, an ocean, a volcano, a lighthouse, a museum, a shopping precinct and a stadium. Twelve sports run across it, nine of which are competitive sports with a full offline ladder and online multiplayer, while three are leisure activities that exist purely for exploration.

Important hardware note: the game is built for Nintendo Switch 2 and does not run on the original Switch. It plays in TV mode and Tabletop mode; the official store pages list handheld mode as unsupported. Original Joy-Con work for everything except Skateboarding, which requires Joy-Con 2 mouse mode, and Pro Controllers are not supported.

Modes at a Glance

Offline single-player

The Island Crown ladder is the backbone of solo play. You start every competitive sport at rank 20 and climb through twenty opponents. Clear the ladder and you face that sport's named Island Champion, and beyond them the unnamed Island Legends. A win streak can jump you five ranks at a time, and every rank-up unlocks exclusive cosmetics. The three leisure sports have no ladder at all.

Local multiplayer

Up to four players on one system, with two pairs of Joy-Con (one pair per two players). A Friend Lobby supports up to eight players across systems, with a maximum of two players per system. Play with your own profile rather than as a guest: guests earn zero Spocco Points and are locked to default customization.

Online

Online play requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online subscription. You get a Friend Lobby (up to 8 players, 2 per system), Casual Online Play, and a ranked Pro League ladder with twelve tiers that starts you at rank E. Per-sport player caps vary: most sports cap at four, Golf goes up to eight, Bowling is the outlier at sixteen, and Boxing is a two-player duel.
